サトウキビ畑：現代のサトウキビ品種は、高い糖含有量を持つサトウキビ（Saccharum officinarum、表紙写真）と、丈夫で病気に強く、収穫後の株から萌芽させて育てる株出し栽培の可能な野生サトウキビ（Saccharum spontaneum）を掛け合わせた倍数体の異種間雑種となっている。今回解読されたゲノム塩基配列は、8倍体のS. spontaneum SES208から葯の培養によって作り出された1倍体の配列（アクセッション番号はAP85-441）である。
