Seven-figure salaries are becoming the norm for Australia's vice-chancellors, according to a recent Times Higher Education analysis, which found that the average remuneration package for heads of Australia's 37 public universities reached AU$982,900 (US$673,777) in 2018. A Neue Zürcher Zeitung investigation shows how researchers in China are publishing studies with questionable methods, which has consequences for scientists worldwide. "In China, bad research can be worth gold," write journalists Haluka Maier-Borst and Joana Kelén. Young universities are questioning the value of lectures, and this new study finds that students who engage in active learning learn more, but feel like they learn less, than peers in more lecture-oriented classrooms. And finally, here's why science PhDs should be more than just a training path for academia. "I'm a PhD candidate in chemistry with no intention of pursuing a career in academia, and I'm certainly not alone," says Sarah Anderson, from Northwestern University. |
